How To Avoid Creating Flat Characters

Your characters will take the reader on your story’s narrative journey, so be sure to devote plenty of time to character development to make each character believable.

Ask yourself who each character really is and flesh them out with a rich inner life in order to make them completely three-dimensional.  Some writers think creating backstories for characters would be a waste of their time, but creating backstories for both main characters and secondary characters can add deeper detail to what you end up writing.  Any (or all) aspects of the backstory might not make it into your novel, but it will help inform your writing as you develop character arcs.

Every character can be made interesting and imbued with depth, whether they’re main characters, love interests, foils, or bad guys.
