I hope everyone is starting to enjoy the warmer weather and venture outside more.  After a pandemic year and a long cold winter, I’m sure we’re all ready to get outside and help something grow!

This got me to thinking about all the gardeners and horticulturists in our favorite books.

Here’s the list I could think of:

Samwise Gamgee, from the Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R. Tolkien

The one small garden of a free gardener was all his need and due, not a garden swollen to a realm; his own hands to use, not the hands of others to command. ‘And anyway all these notions are only a trick,’ he said to himself.

Rubeus Hagrid from the Harry Potter saga by J.K. Rowling

I’ve a lot of strange things growin’ out in my near my garden; yer welcome to go take a look. Be careful mind – wouldn’t go wanderin’ round at night

Mary Lennox from The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

‘It’s a secret garden, and I’m the only one in the world who wants it to be alive.”
